چکیده

The buffalo is considered as sluggish breeder as the reproductive efficiency of buffalo is adversely affected by certain constraints such as late maturity, poor expression of the estrous signs particularly during summer, irregular estrous cycle, silent heat, seasonality in breeding, poor conception rate/early embryonic mortality and prolonged inter-calving interval. Buffalo reproduction in tropical and subtropical part of the world is considered as short day breeder and its reproductive efficiency is greatly and adversely influenced by biometeorological factors. However, in equatorial zone buffalo can show estrous cycle throughout the year provided adequate nutrition is provided to maintain the reproductive efficiency and become seasonally polyestrous with distance from the equator attributed to the environmental factors and photoperiod. Season of calving has a profound effect on service period. As reported in India, buffaloes calving in late winter and early summer have lower reproductive efficiency compared to those calving during other periods and calving during rainy or monsoon season had shorter anoestrus period than other season calvers.

Postpartum endocrinology and prospects for fertility improvement in the lactating riverine buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) and yak (Poephagus grunniens L.)

In many Asian countries the riverine buffalo is the major milk producing animal besides contributing towards draught power and meat production. The animal however suffers from inherent reproductive problems such as poor estrus expression and long calving intervals which limits its lifetime production. The yak is a seasonal breeder and the mainstay of highlanders and tribal populations inhabitin...

Study on follicular characteristics, hormonal and biochemical profile in norgestomet+PMSG treated acyclic buffaloes

This research was conducted to study the follicular dynamics, hormonal, biochemical profile and fertility response in acyclic and norgestomet+PMSG treated acyclic buffaloes in summer. The study animals were divided into two groups: group I [control (n=8): no treatment] and II [treatment group (n=15)]. In group II, seven animals were used for follicular biochemical and hormonal profile and eight...

Endocrine Aspects of Oestrous Cycle in Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis): An Overview

There is worldwide interest in buffalo as an animal for meeting the growing demands of meat, milk and work in the developing countries. One of the major constraints to full exploitation of the productive potential of buffalo has been its inherently low reproductive efficiency as reflected by late maturity, poor expression of oestrus, silent oestrus, irregular oestrous cyclicity, seasonality in ...

Reproductive Biotechnologies for Improvement of Buffalo: The Current Status

Reproductive biotechnologies continue to be developed for genetic improvement of both river and swamp buffalo. Although artificial insemination using frozen semen emerged some decades back, there are still considerable limitations. The major problem appears to be the lack of efficient methods for estrus detection and timely insemination. Controlled breeding experiments in the buffalo had been l...

Ovarian Follicle Population and Follicle Size in Anatolian Water Buffaloes

Buffaloes are well known domestic animals in Asia, Mediterranean and Latin American countries of the world for different breeding purposes such as milk, meat, draught and capital [23]. The buffalo has been regarded as poor reproductive efficiency and characterized by low conception rates [6, 22, 23]. Seasonality of buffalo breeding results in a milk supply that exceeds demand in summer and autu...
